Recently a Sacramento Bee article detailed the tough decisions that CIF Commissioner Pete Saco is facing. With a rash of unsportsmanlike events plaguing secondary school sports, Saco is now being asked to rule on post game hand shaking with the other teams. The tradition has become a breeding ground for potential problems.

On the field, a player's ability has been able to dictate the team morale and locker room climate. If unaddressed, poor sportsmanship ultimately cripples momentum and comradery. Class room disruptions, academic lethargy, off-the-field run-ins with the law, and sexual conquest are all the result of a character deficiency.

What if a team wins and then loses four top players for the next game because of a post game brawl? Is that success?

What if a player rushes for two thousand yards and then is dropped for grades because of an "F" in PE? Is that success?

What if an entire undefeated season crumbles in the playoffs because two star players were accused of sexual assault of a female student? Was the season successful?

The answer to the above is "Of course not!" The season or player in one of the above scenarios is looked at with regret. However, this can be addressed proactively.

The athletic community must redefine success, placing an increased commitment to character development. The contribution players ultimately make in life and their community is the watermark for true success.

Character Combine seeks to help coaches turn the tide by offering answers and alternatives. This Combine equips coaches with a network of other like-minded coaches.
